How many chickens fit in a 4×8 coop?
If the usable inside floor really measures 4 ft × 8 ft, it has 32 sq ft. With outdoor access, that reaches Oregon State Extension's 3 sq ft indoor minimum for 10 adult standard-size chickens (10 × 3 = 30 sq ft). Eleven would need 33 sq ft, more than this floor provides under that rule. This is an area comparison, not a safe-capacity rating.
| Daytime arrangement | What 32 sq ft shows | Other space |
|---|---|---|
| Secured run or other outdoor access | 10 birds × 3 sq ft = 30 sq ft minimum. The 4×8 floor exceeds that by 2 sq ft. | For 10 laying hens, Penn State's run figure is 80 sq ft (10 × 8 sq ft). |
| Mostly indoors, no outdoor access | At OSU's 8 sq ft lower end, 4 birds use 32 sq ft. At the 10 sq ft upper end, 3 birds use 30 sq ft. | This yields an area-only range of 3 to 4 birds, depending on where within OSU's 8–10 sq ft range you plan. |
First measure the space birds can use
A product advertised as “4×8” may include wall thickness, nest-box overhang, storage or an attached run. Those areas are not automatically indoor floor. Measure the clear interior length and width separately. If the only number available is exterior, the fit answer is not enough information. Enter true inside measurements into the coop size and fit calculator for a component-by-component check.
Example checklist for 10 laying hens with a run
- Indoor floor: 30 sq ft minimum, with our optional 20% roomier target of 36 sq ft. A true 4×8 floor reaches the minimum but falls short of that optional target.
- Secured run: 80 sq ft using Penn State's laying-hen figure.
- Nest boxes: 3 using ceil(10 ÷ 4), based on OSU's one per about four birds.
- Usable roost length: 4.17 ft–8.33 ft, based on OSU's 5–10 inches per bird.
- Ventilation, dry drainage, predator resistance, cleaning access and local rules require separate review.
The floor calculation applies to adult standard-size backyard chickens. It is not a rule for chicks, meat-bird production, ducks, bantams, unusually large breeds or mixed species. A floor-area result does not establish welfare or construction safety.
