How To Use
Enter the date your doe was bred and choose her breed type to estimate her kidding (due) date, how far along she is, and what to expect at this stage of pregnancy.
Quick Steps
- 1 Select the breed type (standard or Nigerian Dwarf / mini).
- 2 Enter the breeding date (the day she was mated or bred).
- 3 Click Calculate to see the kidding date and current stage.

How to Use the Goat Gestation Calculator
Working out when your doe will kid takes about a minute. The calculator counts forward from the breeding date using the average goat gestation length, then maps today's date onto the pregnancy so you know how far along she is and what to expect right now.
- Choose the breed type. Standard breeds use a 150-day average. Nigerian Dwarf and mini breeds use a slightly shorter 149-day average.
- Enter the breeding date. Use the day she was mated or artificially inseminated. If she was exposed to a buck over several days, use the first date for the earliest possible due date.
- Read the window. The tool shows the earliest (day 145), expected (day 150), and latest (day 155) kidding dates, plus a stage guide for where she is today.
How Long Are Goats Pregnant?
Goats are pregnant for approximately 150 days, or about five months, measured from breeding. The normal range is 145 to 155 days. Unlike body size, which varies enormously between breeds, gestation length is remarkably consistent across goats, which is what makes a due-date calculator so reliable.
A few factors nudge the date. Does carrying multiple kids often deliver a day or two early, first fresheners can run slightly longer, and mini breeds tend to kid at the earlier end of the range. If a doe reaches day 156 without any sign of labor, keep a close eye on her and call your vet for advice.
Goat Gestation Length by Breed
All goats sit close to the 150-day average, but there are small, useful differences. The smaller the breed, the more likely she is to kid a touch early.
| Breed group | Average gestation | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Nigerian Dwarf / mini | 149 days | 145–153 days |
| Pygmy | 150 days | 145–153 days |
| Dairy breeds (Nubian, Alpine, Saanen, LaMancha) | 150 days | 145–155 days |
| Boer and meat breeds | 150 days | 148–155 days |
Goat Gestation Chart by Stage
Pregnancy is easiest to manage in stages. The chart below maps the days after breeding to what is happening and what you should be doing.
| Days after breeding | Stage | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–30 | Early gestation, implantation | Keep the normal ration, avoid stress. Watch for a return to heat around day 21. |
| Days 30–90 | Mid gestation | Confirm and count kids by ultrasound. Maintain good, not fat, body condition. |
| Days 90–120 | Late gestation begins | Increase energy and protein. Give a CDT booster about 4 weeks before kidding. |
| Days 120–144 | Pre-kidding | Move to a clean kidding pen, prepare your kit, and begin checking ligaments daily. |
| Days 145–155 | Kidding window | Watch closely for labor signs. Most does kid unassisted; be ready to help if needed. |
How to Tell If a Goat Is Pregnant
Goats do not show obvious signs early on, so the surest confirmations are veterinary. Watch for these signs and use a test to be certain:
- No return to heat: A doe who does not come back into heat around 21 days after breeding is likely pregnant.
- Ultrasound (day 30–45): The most reliable confirmation, and it can count the number of kids.
- Blood test (from day 30): A pregnancy-associated protein test is accurate and easy to run through a lab.
- Gradual weight gain and a widening belly become noticeable from mid pregnancy onward.
- Udder development usually appears only in the last few weeks, especially in first fresheners.
A false pregnancy, or cloudburst, can mimic some of these signs, which is another reason a scan or blood test is worthwhile before you plan your kidding schedule.
Signs of Kidding (Labor)
As the due date nears, your doe will tell you labor is coming. The single most useful sign is the softening of the tail-head ligaments, which go from firm to jelly-like in the final 12 to 24 hours.
- Udder fills and tightens, sometimes becoming shiny.
- Tail-head ligaments soften and the area hollows out.
- The vulva loosens, swells, and may show a string of clear discharge.
- Restlessness, pawing at bedding, and separating from the herd.
- Going off feed and talking quietly to her flank.
Once hard contractions begin, a kid should appear within about 30 minutes. Call your vet if she strains hard for 30 minutes with no progress, if you see a red discharge before any kid, or if she seems exhausted or distressed.
Caring for a Pregnant Doe
Good, steady nutrition matters far more than lots of it. About 70 percent of fetal growth happens in the last six weeks, so that is when her needs climb.
- First three months: Maintain good forage and a normal ration. Keep her fit, not fat.
- Last six weeks: Gradually add energy and protein to support the growing kids and coming milk supply.
- Minerals: Offer loose goat minerals free choice, and ensure adequate selenium and copper for your region.
- Vaccination: A CDT booster about four weeks before kidding passes protection to the kids through colostrum.
- Watch for toxaemia: Does carrying multiples are at risk of pregnancy toxaemia late on, so never let a heavily pregnant doe stop eating.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How long are goats pregnant?
Goats are pregnant for about 150 days, or roughly five months, with a normal range of 145 to 155 days. Smaller breeds such as Nigerian Dwarf tend to kid a few days earlier, often 145 to 153 days.
How long is a Nigerian Dwarf goat pregnant?
Nigerian Dwarf and other mini breeds average about 145 to 153 days, slightly shorter than the 150-day average for standard dairy and meat breeds. Use the breed toggle in the calculator to switch between the two.
How do you know if a goat is pregnant?
The most reliable methods are a vet ultrasound from around day 30 to 45, or a blood pregnancy test from about day 30. At home, watch for a doe who fails to return to heat about 21 days after breeding, gradual weight gain, and a widening belly by mid pregnancy. Udder development usually appears only in the last few weeks.
What are the signs a goat is close to kidding?
In the final days you will often see a filling udder, a softening and hollowing on either side of the tail head as the pelvic ligaments relax, a loosening vulva, restlessness, pawing at bedding, going off feed, and a string of clear or amber discharge. Active labor usually follows within hours.
How many kids do goats usually have?
Twins are most common. First-time does often have a single kid, while mature does frequently have twins or triplets, and occasionally quads. An ultrasound in mid pregnancy can give you an accurate count so you can prepare.
How accurate is a goat due date calculator?
It is accurate to within a few days when you know the exact breeding date, because goat gestation is fairly consistent. Treat the result as the centre of a window from day 145 to 155 rather than a fixed date, and have your kidding kit ready a week ahead.
What should I feed a pregnant goat?
Keep the doe on good forage and a maintenance ration for the first three months, avoiding excess weight. In the final six weeks, when most fetal growth happens, gradually increase energy and protein and provide loose minerals. Do not over-condition, as fat does struggle more at kidding.
How soon can a goat get pregnant again after kidding?
A doe can come back into heat within a few weeks, but most breeders rest her and re-breed once the current kids are weaned and she has recovered condition. Seasonal breeders will only cycle again during the autumn breeding season.
