Pig gestation calculator
Pig Gestation Calculator

How To Use

Enter the date your sow (or mini/potbelly pig) was bred to estimate her farrowing (due) date, how far along she is, and what to expect at this stage. Pig gestation is the same for pet and smallholder pigs, about 114 days.

Quick Steps

  • 1 Enter the breeding date (the day she was mated or served).
  • 2 Click Calculate to see the farrowing date and current stage.
  • 3 Remember the rule of thumb: 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days.

How to Use the Pig Gestation Calculator

Whether you keep a herd of sows or a single pet potbelly, the timing is the same. The calculator counts forward from the breeding date using the 114-day average and shows the full farrowing window plus what to do at each stage.

  1. Enter the breeding date. Use the day the sow was served or inseminated. If she was with the boar for several days, use the first service for the earliest possible date.
  2. Calculate. You get the earliest (day 111), expected (day 114), and latest (day 115) farrowing dates.
  3. Follow the stage guide. The result tells you where she is today and what to prepare next.

How Long Are Pigs Pregnant?

Pigs are pregnant for about 114 days, famously remembered as 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. The normal range is 111 to 115 days, one of the tightest of any farm animal, which is why farrowing dates are so easy to predict.

Gestation barely changes with body size, so a 90-kilogram potbelly pet and a 250-kilogram commercial sow both carry for roughly the same 114 days. Larger litters can arrive a day early, and gilts having their first litter sometimes run a day or two late. A sow still not farrowing by day 116 should be checked by a vet.

Pig Gestation Chart by Stage

The chart below breaks the 114 days into practical stages so you know what is happening and what to do.

Days after breedingStageWhat to do
Days 1–30Early gestationKeep a steady ration. Confirm by ultrasound from about day 21–25.
Days 31–75Mid gestationMaintain condition. Avoid overfeeding, which causes farrowing problems.
Days 76–100Late gestationIncrease feed as piglets grow. Deworm and vaccinate per your vet.
Days 101–110Pre-farrowingMove to a clean farrowing pen. Add bedding, fibre, and fresh water.
Days 111–115Farrowing windowWatch for milk and nesting. Be on hand in case of difficulty.

Signs a Sow Is About to Farrow

The most dependable sign is milk. Once you can express milk from the teats, farrowing usually follows within about 12 hours.

  • Milk let-down: Milk can be squeezed from the teats, the clearest 24-hour warning.
  • Udder and vulva swelling: The udder firms up and the vulva enlarges and reddens.
  • Nest-building: Even on concrete, a sow will root, arrange bedding, and become restless.
  • Off feed: Appetite drops in the final day.
  • Restlessness and lying down: She will settle on her side as contractions begin.

Piglets normally arrive every 15 to 20 minutes. Call your vet if the sow strains hard for 45 to 60 minutes with no piglet, if more than an hour passes between piglets while more are clearly due, or if she seems exhausted or distressed.

Farrowing for Pet Mini and Potbelly Pigs

Pet pig owners face the same 114-day timeline but a few different practicalities. Litters are usually smaller, often 4 to 8 piglets, and a house pig will still try hard to build a nest, so give her a quiet, bedded space away from foot traffic.

If you did not plan the litter, this is a good moment to think ahead: an intact pet pig can breed again quickly, and unplanned litters are hard to rehome. Once the piglets arrive, our Mini Pig Weight Guide shows how big they are likely to get, and the Homestead Pets hub links the rest of our small-livestock tools.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are pigs pregnant?

Pigs are pregnant for about 114 days, remembered as the rule of three: 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days. The normal range is 111 to 115 days. This is true for commercial sows and for pet mini and potbelly pigs alike, since gestation length does not change much with body size.

How long is a mini or potbelly pig pregnant?

The same as any pig, about 114 days. Mini, potbelly, and Kunekune pigs all carry for roughly 111 to 115 days, so the 3-months-3-weeks-3-days rule works for pet pigs too.

What is the rule of thumb for pig gestation?

Three months, three weeks, and three days. Counting three calendar months from the breeding date, then adding 24 days, lands you very close to the 114-day average. The calculator does this for you and also shows the earliest and latest expected dates.

What are the signs a sow is about to farrow?

In the final 24 hours you will usually see milk that can be expressed from the teats, restlessness and nest-building, a swollen vulva, and a drop in appetite. Farrowing typically begins within 12 hours of milk let-down and often starts in the evening or overnight.

How many piglets are in a litter?

Commercial sows commonly have 8 to 14 piglets. Pet mini and potbelly pigs usually have smaller litters, often 4 to 8. First-time gilts tend to have fewer piglets than mature sows.

How accurate is the farrowing date?

Very accurate when the breeding date is known, because pig gestation is consistent. Treat day 114 as the centre of a short window from day 111 to 115, and have the farrowing pen ready by day 110.

When should I move the sow to the farrowing pen?

Move her to a clean farrowing area around day 110, a few days before she is due, so she can settle and build a nest. Provide bedding, cut back feed slightly, and add fibre to reduce constipation around farrowing.

Can I use this for a Kunekune or other pet pig?

Yes. All domestic pig breeds share the roughly 114-day gestation, so the calculator works for Kunekune, potbelly, mini, and standard breeds. Just enter the breeding date.
